POST B’NEI MITZVAH
A high percentage of our post B’nei Mitzvah students enroll in our eighth grade program to learn about our Jewish community, other religions and Jewish community organizations. The eighth grade class generally meets every other Sunday, with occasional exceptions for special programs and holidays. The optional Madrichim Training program meets on the "off" Sundays as scheduled with the Pre-K-7th grade program.
Units of study for the standard program are:
- Know Your Synagogue
- Comparative Judaism
- Comparative Religions
- Your Jewish Community
Each unit of study will utilize the most effective method for conveying the information to students. For example, in the Know Your Own Synagogue unit, we will meet with our congregational staff and lay leaders to gain a better understanding of our congregation's inner workings. The rest of the units will utilize field trips and speakers for many of the classes. Read more about the eighth grade curriculum here.
Parents are required to provide transportation to and from field trips either individually or by carpool, and are invited to attend most field trip activities. All field trips will allow for an introduction period as well as a question and answer period with time for "debriefing" as needed. Many of these field trips will challenge your preconceived ideas, stir feelings and thoughts that will need to be further discussed.
We plan to conclude the year with a field trip to the Jewish community in a large city (ie. Los Angeles or Phoenix) in which we will visit museums, Jewish shops and a deli, and other points of Jewish interest. We will finish the trip with a visit to an amusement and/or water park. This year-end trip will only be available to students who have attended class on a regular basis during the year. This field trip will have an additional cost.
