Phyllis Noble and Betsy Sandlin reading excerpts from Robert Klein’s book
On Sunday, April 22 our synagogue officially opened our library with wonderful fanfare and seventy guests. Bob Cohen, who in 2005 envisioned linking the Jewish Community Center’s lending library to other Jewish community libraries, spoke about the importance of keeping books of Jewish content – books about Jews, Jewish history, Jewish authors – available to all. A year ago, with approval and funding from Rabbi Louchheim, Roberta and Marty Greene began the laborious process of cataloging over 1000 volumes on our bookshelves. The Greenes catalogued and organized our books and developed a check-out system for members and others to utilize our resources. The Greenes created a special shelf dedicated to 'our own' authors -- members of Or Chadash or their relatives. That shelf will contain books by, among others: David Levy, Lauren Grossman, Michael Tauber, Amy Lederman, Robert Klein, Naomi Benaron, Sol Resnick, and Bonnie Marson.
At our Sunday event Rabbi Louchheim praised the efforts of the Greenes and gave them a gift of several of the books written by our congregants.
Betsy Sandlin and Phyllis Noble then read excerpts from Robert Klein’s book, Being First: An informal History of the Early Peace Corps. Robert, who recently passed away, was in the first group of Peace Corp Volunteers who went to Ghana in 1961 to teach.
We concluded with a special breakfast in honor of this opening, sponsored by Marcia and Rabbi Louchheim. We are most appreciative of the assistance and the food provided by Rina and Jim Liebeskind, Millie and Art Miller, Susan Pollack and Renee Sebag.
