Cantor Cohen has served Congregation Or Chadash since 1999.
An Arizona native, Cantor Janece Erman Cohen was born on the Navajo Reservation, and has since spent most of her life in Tucson. She has, however, spent 18 years in between serving congregations in California, New York, Sydney (Australia) and Hong Kong.
Starting her career as a cantorial soloist in Tucson while she was earning her Music Education Degree from the University of Arizona, she went from there to study at Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion in both California and New York, graduating with a Master’s Degree in Sacred Music and being ordained as cantor in 1990.Since returning to Tucson, Cantor Cohen has served Congregation Or Chadash, as well as taught music and Judaic Studies at the Tucson Hebrew Academy. Her greatest love is sharing Jewish Choral music, and she founded and directs both the Tucson Jewish Youth Choir, now in its thirteenth year, and Kol Shirah, the Tucson Jewish Community Adult Choir.
At Or Chadash, Cantor Cohen conducts Shirei Simcha (our fabulous Adult Choir), the Friday Night LIVE! Teen Choir, and an adult Klezmer Ensemble known affectionately as the Chailights. She also teaches music and prayers in the Religious School, coordinates the Bar/Bat Mitzvah program, and of course, provides music for all religious services.
Cantor Cohen is the proud mother of Zachary, a law student at the University of Arizona, and the owner of Eliahu, a cockatiel who whistles the Torah Blessings.
