Religious School News and Calendar

From The Desk Of The Education Director ...

   (July/August, 2010)

By Rina Liebeskind, Director of Education

   Shalom Religious School parents!

Summer vacation is almost over and at Or Chadash we have been working hard to prepare for the upcoming year. A Religious School Information Packet was mailed to all of our students at the end of July. If you did not receive your child’s packet, please call me at the office right away and we’ll get one out to you.

Over the summer, one of the things I worked on with the help of the Religious School Education Committee was to map out the school year to help in planning both family and staff involvement. We had some very productive ideas that we hope to share with you throughout the year. Here are just a few examples of the ideas we hope to put into action:

   *   Establish a core group of Room Parents, set up a meeting and training sessions to better utilize the parents’ various skills and talents.
   *   Create a short communication survey to find out the best way to reach everyone.
   *   Invite all parents who drop off students on Sundays, to park their cars and join us for the first 10 minutes of Sunday school.
   *   Develop a Religious School Teachers’ Wish List. Teachers will prepare a wish list of items needed in the class. Parents will be asked to check and see if there is an item they may be able to donate to their child’s class.
   *    A small group of teachers got together over the summer to work on making our Religious school concept of Tzedakah (Charity) more meaningful to our students and parents. The task force will share their ideas with the rest of the staff during orientation and with the Religious School at our first gathering of the year towards the end of August.

There will be a Friday Night Family Shabbat Service to kick off the year with our incoming Sixth Graders to help lead the service on August 13th at 6:30 p.m. at Handmaker. We hope to see all of our Religious School families join us there. Another fun family event is the Havdalah Hoe-Down, scheduled for Saturday, August 21st with an Israeli Bar-B-Q dinner. (Call the office for details).

TASHLICH FOR FAMILIES
THROW AWAY YOUR MISTAKES WITH OR CHADASH

We invite our families to join us at the Mehl Park on River Road (just West of Pontatoc) on September 12th from noon to 1:00 p.m. Bring in your picnic blankets and have lunch with us as we welcome the Jewish New Year with the ceremony of Tashlich. Traditionally, Tashlich is performed between Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur to get rid of our “mistakes” as we recite Tashlich prayers (throw away in Hebrew). Emptying our pockets is another way to symbolize our wish to begin the Jewish New Year with a “clean slate” and be forgiven by God.

SUKKOT SHABBAT SERVICE AND POTLUCK

6:30 p.m., Friday, September 24th Or Chadash Sukkah Come enjoy a service under our Sukkah with friends and family for a congregational Potluck dinner and Sukkot Shabbat Service.

We hope to see all of our parents joining us and taking advantage of these events that help strengthen the connections to Judaism and our congregation.

Religious School/Youth News We wish everyone at Or Chadash a Happy and Healthy New Year.

“We Need YOU!”

The members of the Or Chadash Religious School Education Committee need YOU! We know you are busy; you’re hesitant to take on even one more thing. We are too! However, we all are committed to see that Or Chadash provides its families and children with an outstanding educational experience. And, we need YOU to make that happen.

We need YOU to join the Education Committee! Here is what you need to know:

    1. The time commitment is not very big.
We meet approximately once a month from August through May during the evening for no more than 90 minutes.
We each take on one or two small tasks during the year such as recruiting room parents, working at open house, helping with teacher appreciation, etc.

    2. We make a difference!
We discuss and give input to the Board of Directors on everything from curriculum to policies and budget.
We directly support Rina and our teachers and aides so they can give students their best.

Please join us Monday, May 17th at 7:00 p.m. for an introductory Education Committee Meeting. We will wrap up the school year and discuss the upcoming fall session. For further information or to attend a meeting, just contact Rina Liebeskind, 512-8500 ext. 14 or education@orchadash-tucson.org by clicking here.
